Chapter One:

Hello, and welcome to Creative Writing! I'm Mrs. Case, and as an avid reader and writer, I am excited and honored to be teaching this class this year. This is going to be a busy year, full of writing, but also reading. We will cover just about everything, from fiction and poetry to creative nonfiction and drama. During each unit, we will be creating our own work, but also taking a tip or two from the pros -- in other words, in addition to reading and discussing our own writing, we will read work from well-known and talented authors, poets, and dramatists. I am confident that whether you are new to creative writing or an aspiring Nobel laureate, you will gain valuable techniques, skills, and feedback this year.

Over the course of the year, I hope that this blog serves as a useful resource by allowing you to:
  • keep updated on daily assignments and important upcoming class deadlines
  • link to extra, interesting articles, stories, and images related to the units we study
  • post comments, ask questions, or share your thoughts
  • get in touch with me (in addition to email, phone, or drop-in communication)
  • easily link to the school Home Access Center (i.e. student grades and more)
As you may have noticed, comments to this page will be moderated (by me) to keep things (reasonably) friendly and civilized, but unless you say something that is highly insensitive or inexcusably offensive, you can feel pretty confident that your comments will be posted. I will not edit comments that have been approved; whatever is posted can and very well may be read by everyone with access to this blog (which, really, is literally everyone with internet access).

That said, please take a moment to comment to this post by briefly summarizing what you hope to get out of this class this year (personally, academically, technically, creatively, intellectually, etc.). Thanks, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

  1. during this year i am hoping that i will be able to gain a better liking for writing because right now i personally do not enjoy to write at all. also i want to tr to meet new people in the small group styled writer workshop activities that we will be doing.

  2. I absolutly love writing and being able to express myself the way I want to. I don't like being weighed down by essay rules of writing and this class gives me more lean way this that kind of thing. I want to become a better writer in different genres that I'm not too familar with. Plus, this is way better than just sitting in a regular english class.

  3. I actually didn't choose this class...it was destiny that I would be in this holy class! I have waited for senior year to have this class so I could work on my many writing challenges, but I still need a lot more work. Now though through this class I will be able to express my intense imagination(within the limits of school writing rules)to many others and also learn from other awesome writers so I may grow even more as a great writer. I do have to warn people that when the genre writing section comes up I will have some pretty sweet sci-fi stories for everyone! ;]

  4. I took the second semester of this class last year with Ms. Phifer. I really enjoyed it and wanted to take the first semester to finish the class, and also to get the rest of my english out of the way so that I don't necessarily have to take english my senior year.

  6. Coming from a family where writing is a shared passion, it was a no brainer that this class was one that I wanted to take. One reason being I just love writing and love a class that just pushes me to do so. Another being I need help spelling and grammer wise like crazy. I'm really looking forward to this class.

  8. I was surprised to find out that this class is offered both semesters! Poetry is pretty completely unknown to me so I look forward to understanding different types and meanings to the words poets have published and what I should try to summarize by someone's poems. I look forward to exploring my imagination in general.. Hope you enjoyed the comment. ttfn!

  9. I'm hoping that this class will help me learn how to plan my writing a little more so that it might have a little more ummph to it. I usually whip out a paper over night because I find the planning of a paper so boring. Hopefully this class will change my opinion on that and also be a fun learning environment as well.

  11. Well for starters, I love writing, I mean I absolutely LOVE it. I've been writing since I was physically able to hold a pencil. Its both a way to creatively express thoughts and ideas as well as escape the everyday and sink into a place completely new with endless possibilities. I hope this class will prompt some new ideas and give me further understanding as to how to become a better writer. :) :P :D
